ETIAS 2026: What the Electronic Travel Authorisation

ETIAS 2026: What the Electronic Travel Authorisation for Schengen Is and Who Needs to Apply
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new European electronic travel authorisation that the EU will introduce for citizens of non-EU countries who currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa for short stays.
⚠️ Important: ETIAS is not a visa.
It is a mandatory pre-travel authorisation, similar to ESTA (United States) or eTA (Canada).
1) Why ETIAS is being introduced
ETIAS has been created to:
- strengthen security at the EU’s external borders;
- carry out pre-travel checks before travellers arrive;
- reduce risks of irregular migration;
- make border checks more efficient for authorised travellers.
With ETIAS, checks take place online before departure, not only at the border.
2) Who must apply for ETIAS
ETIAS will be mandatory for citizens of non-EU countries that currently enjoy visa-free travel to Schengen, including (for example):
- United Kingdom
- United States
- Canada
- Australia
- Japan
- South Korea
- and other visa-exempt countries
👉 If you can currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days, from 2026 you will first need an approved ETIAS.
3) Who does NOT need ETIAS
ETIAS is not required for:
- EU / EEA / Swiss citizens;
- holders of a residence permit or residence card issued by an EU country;
- holders of a Schengen visa;
- people entering the EU with a national visa for work, study, or residence.
📌 ETIAS applies only to short stays (up to 90 days within 180).
4) How the ETIAS application works
🖥️ Online application
ETIAS must be requested online before travelling.
Applicants will need to:
- complete a form with personal details;
- enter passport information;
- indicate the country of first entry into Schengen;
- answer basic security and background questions.
💳 Fee
- €7 for applicants aged 18 to 70
- free of charge for minors and applicants over 70
5) Processing times
In most cases:
- authorisation is granted within minutes
In some cases:
- additional checks may be required;
- processing can take up to 30 days
👉 For this reason, it is recommended to apply well in advance, even if approval is often fast.
6) Validity of ETIAS
Once approved, ETIAS is valid for:
- up to 3 years, or
- until the passport expires (if earlier)
During this period:
- multiple entries to the Schengen Area are allowed;
- the traveller must always respect the 90/180 rule.
7) ETIAS and the 90/180 rule
ETIAS does not replace the 90 days within 180 rule.
- It only authorises travel;
- the length of stay is still checked at the border.
With the introduction of EES (Entry/Exit System), the calculation of days will become automatic and more strictly enforced, making overstays easier to detect.
8) When ETIAS will become mandatory
ETIAS will not apply in 2025 and will not start at the beginning of 2026.
📅 According to current planning, ETIAS is expected to be introduced in the second half of 2026:
- after EES becomes fully operational;
- with a possible transitional or grace period at the start.
📌 This is why many articles mention “late 2026”: they are referring to ETIAS, not EES.
9) What changes for travellers
Before travelling:
- you will need a valid ETIAS;
- without it, you may be denied boarding by the carrier.
At the border:
compliance with the 90/180 rule.
checks may be faster if ETIAS is approved;
border authorities may still verify:
purpose of travel;
sufficient financial means;
Summary
- ETIAS is an electronic travel authorisation, not a visa
- it applies to visa-exempt non-EU nationals
- it becomes mandatory in 2026 (second half of the year)
- cost: €7
- validity: up to 3 years
